E-mail settings
The following server settings apply to all e-mail programs.
The example below (screenshots) is specific to Outlook Express.
Note: Substitute "yourdomain" in the examples below with the name of your new domain
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.yourdomain.com OR mail.your-isp.com (Your ISP may use a different format)
Your Internet Service Provider may not allow sending mail through your mail server. Some ISP's require that you send mail through their outgoing servers using your login for that account. If that is the case, use your ISP's outgoing mail server.
PLEASE TEST OUTGOING MAIL!
After setting up your account, try sending a message from your new address. If you get an error (such as "server does not allow relay") it is likely that your ISP does not allow sending from an address not on their servers. This restriction is common with dial-up accounts, but many broadband providers also disallow smtp relay.
If you do have to use your ISP's outgoing mail server, try using your new domain address in the From: field (address entered in Step 5 below). This will give the appearance of sending mail from the yourdomain.com address. However, note that some ISPs will not even allow this (to prevent spamming).
For example, in Step 5 below, enter your your new e-mail address.
In Step 6, enter your ISP's outgoing server (SMTP)
This will give the appearance of sending mail from your new domain address.
Username: full e-mail address (Ex: username@yourdomain.com)
Password: whatever password is assigned to your account.
Don't forget: your user name is your full e-mail address. (joe@yourdomain.com)
Not using your full e-mail address as the user name is the most common cause of e-mail errors.
Webmail
In addition to using an e-mail client like Outlook Express, you can access your e-mail through the Internet, from any browser using the above Username and Password.
It is very important to be familiar with webmail, because this is the first step in troubleshooting e-mail problems. If you are having trouble sending or receiving e-mail with your e-mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.), please attempt to send and receive e-mail via webmail. This will indicate whether the mail servers are working and help determine if the problem is specific to your computer or ISP.
Webmail is located at: www.yourdomain.com/webmail OR www.yourdomain.com:2095
When accessing webmail for your account, you will need to login with your full e-mail address and password. From the main webmail page, you can choose which webmail program to use: NeoMail, Horde or Squirrel Mail. This is a per-session choice (not permanent) and you can select whichever program you want.
NeoMail has a very simple interface, while Horde offers more functionality and full IMAP support. Squirrel Mail is sort of a combination of the two which many users find suits their needs best. You may choose any of them and try them out, but it is recommended to stick with one to avoid confusion about their features and how they are used. All of the webmail programs simply read mail directly off the server - there is no downloading of mail to your computer. This is ideal for people travelling and using a computer that is not their own.
Webmail gives you full access to all of your e-mail that is on the server. This means that if you delete a message permanently (purge/empty it from the trash) it will be gone. This also means that if you have an e-mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) running on a computer and it is set to download mail throughout the day (and you are not keeping copies on the server), those message will be pulled off the server and stored on the computer running the e-mail client.
Don't forget: your user name is your full e-mail address. (joe@yourdomain.com)
Not using your full e-mail address as the user name is the most common cause of e-mail errors.
